Our Teaching Philosophy

At Sankofa Montessori, our guides foster a student-centered learning environment that awakens curiosity and nurtures the unique developmental needs of each child. We strategically place students in multi-age groupings to build growth mindsets and monitor their individual progress. We consciously care for and integrate the diverse cultures and backgrounds of our students into our learning community and engage families throughout their learning journey.

Learn More About Montessori

Child Centered

Child Centered

The learning in the classroom is guided by each child’s own interests and skill levels. Children in a Montessori classroom move around freely and work independently or with others on tasks of their own choosing. The teacher in a Montessori classroom is a highly trained practitioner and a caring guide who works with each child individually, demonstrating various activities and then giving them space to try it on their own.

Learning Environment

Learning Environment

The classroom is intentionally stocked with materials tailored to the developmental needs of children, including the need to learn through different senses (sight, touch/texture, movement, etc.). The classroom is set up to reflect the individualized learning plan for each child that is based on their unique interests and abilities in addition to their academic outcomes.

Multi-Age Classrooms

Multi-Age Classrooms

The Montessori curriculum is intentionally grouped into three-year cycles, rather than broken out into year-by-year expectations for student learning. This respects the fact that children develop and master academic topics at different speeds. A child begins as a member of the youngest cohort in the room, benefitting from the example set by older children.

Continuous Progress Monitoring

Continuous Progress Monitoring

Montessori instructors are trained to pay close attention to the needs of each child in their classroom, enabling them to provide differentiated instruction. The teacher supports the child’s growth through all areas of the curriculum to ensure that each child is exposed to the full sequence of lessons in each area and provides support and new challenges as needed
